Bathroom designs completed in Marbella and the surrounding area
Here you can see some of my bathroom renovations, the ones I consider my best: functional bathrooms with character and a contemporary aesthetic. I’ve been in the business for more than 15 years, ever since I started out lerning and designing alongside Fernando Carmona at Arketipe Málaga. Bathrooms were the first space I specialised in, and they’re still among my favourites.
Some of these images are photos of finished projects and others are renders. Sometimes a design doesn’t end up built exactly as I planned, because it’s not my bathroom, it’s the client’s. Even so, I like to show my best designs on my website, whether built realities or virtual ones.

FUNCTIONAL, BALANCED BATHROOM DESIGN
As in the rest of the home, bathroom design and renovation in Marbella adapt to changes in the way we live: replacing the bathtub with a shower tray, removing the bidet (whose function can be built into the toilet in several ways), wall-hung toilets with concealed cisterns, and more storage space.

BATHROOM RENOVATION: TECHNICAL AND STORAGE SOLUTIONS
After the kitchen, the bathroom is the most technical room in a home. The main challenge, without a doubt, is moving the toilet. In theory it is always possible, but the cost-benefit ratio can suffer badly. In apartment buildings, you may also need your downstairs neighbour’s permission to reach the floor slab from their false ceiling, and that is usually complicated. Everything else is always possible.
Increasing storage space in a bathroom is almost a must, and it has to be done without overloading the space visually. In many designs I have built in a practical shower niche and a storage area behind a partition at the foot of the shower tray. In general, it is not a good idea to use the space where the bathtub was just to fit a shower tray. Shower niches are technically simple, you only need to check that there are no hidden pillars or drainage stacks behind the walls, and that the wall is thick enough. If it isn’t, it has to be built out, with a corresponding loss of usable space.
MICROCEMENT AND OTHER MATERIALS
Bathrooms are still fully tiled, and that is a good solution, but a detailed design can include compositions with vinyl wallpaper, stone or more or less waterproof plaster finishes.
Microcement is my favourite finish for bathrooms: a durable, waterproof coating that allows continuous floors and walls, as well as washbasins, shower trays and shelves. It costs about the same as mid-to-high-range porcelain stoneware tiles, with the great advantage of a colour made to measure.
A WELL-EXECUTED MICROCEMENT ADDS CHARACTER, DURABILITY AND JOINT-FREE SURFACES. IT CAN ALSO BE APPLIED OVER EXISTING TILING, WHICH REDUCES COSTS AND WORKS SCHEDULES.
LIGHTING IS ALSO PART OF BATHROOM DESIGN
Bathrooms often have small windows or none at all, so lighting design is essential. A good combination can include perimeter lighting built into the mirror and low-intensity ambient or decorative lighting, for example in the shower niche or in a ceiling cove.
There’s no need for downlights in the ceiling. Lighting should be where it’s needed, with the right intensity and tone for each function and each moment. At night, for example, a soft, warm light helps us wind down for sleep. When we’re doing our makeup, shaving or putting on our creams, though, we need strong, neutral light on the face, but without dazzling us.
BATHROOM DESIGN WITH PERSONALITY
As in any other room, don’t look for a collection of expensive materials or furniture. Look for a harmonious interior design that matches your style. My approach is a blend of the functionality of minimalism and the warmth of the Mediterranean, adapted to the way of life in Marbella: a synthesis of styles such as Japandi or Wabi-Sabi, which value simplicity, natural materials and the beauty of the imperfect. It’s not about copying a particular style, but about taking what works from each one and adapting it to the space, the light, the materials and, above all, the people who will use it. A good bathroom doesn’t need exclusive materials or a collection of designer pieces to feel special. A good layout, balanced proportions, appropriate lighting and a coherent choice of materials can achieve much more, without blowing the budget.
